چکیده

Undergraduate research in engineering and technology is gaining popularity as an added opportunity of learning and a gateway to advanced studies. Many students find undergraduate research as a tryout for potential graduate studies, as well as a way to establish relationship with research faculty. Albeit new in our Mechanical Engineering Technology department, two students were selected to participate in a research involving defects in composite materials. These students did have minimal background in composites from the general Engineering Materials course. These minority students were supported by summer scholarships from Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (PSLSAMP). The issue of defects and their effect on the mechanical properties of composites is of great concern among high end users. A limited set of experimental investigation with defective composite flat panels was selected for investigation. One of our adjunct faculty offered access to his fabrication facility and guidance to the students for fabricating these ‘defective’ panels. Three types of defects were incorporated: hole as a discontinuity, edge groove simulating transverse crack, and Teflon interlayer simulating delamination. Once the panels were fabricated, strips were cut out for testing. Students also learned special processes for cutting and drilling composites. Aluminum tabs ware glued to the ends of the composite strips to facilitate gripping by tensile tester. Two main testing methods were employed: tensile and 3-point bending. Unique failure modes of these specimens provided a lot of excitement as well as exposure regarding the mechanical behavior of composite materials containing defects. Certain correlations were observed between defects and resulting properties. Testing and results are far from complete. This endeavor provided great enthusiasm for engineering materials among the students. Other students have shown interest for continuing research on these and other materials projects.

Investigations on the Reinforcement of Mechanical Properties of Gypsum Composites Containing E-glass Woven Fabrics

Glass fiber reinforced gypsum composites are new building materials that have been used in covering interior walls. Reinforcement by means of woven fabrics as a three dimensional material is an alternative to the use of short fibers. The application of appropriate fabrics can improve mechanical properties of gypsum composites. The aim of this research article is to investigate the effect of the...

Effect of Defects on Mechanical Properties of Graphene under Shear Loading Using Molecular Dynamic Simulation

Graphene sheet including single vacancy, double vacancy and Stone-Wales with armchair and zigzag structure was simulated using molecular dynamics simulation. The effect of defects on shear’s modulus, shear strength and fracture  strain was investigated. Results showed that these shear properties reduce when the degrees of all kinds of defects increase. The dangling bond in SV and DV defected gr...

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis of Compatibilizer Effect on the Mechanical Properties of Wood Flour-High-Density Polyethylene Composites

In this study, effect of MAPE (maleic anhydride polyethylene) as the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of wood-flour polyethylene composites has been investigated by using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Composites were made at 25% and 50% by weight fiber contents and 1% and 2% compatibilizer respectively. Controls were also made at the same fiber contents without the compatibilize...

Environmental effects on mechanical properties of glass/epoxy and fiber metal laminates, Part II: Isothermal aging

The aim of this study is to investigate effects of isothermal aging on mechanical properties of fiber metal laminates (FMLs) and glass/epoxy composites. For this purpose, both materials were fabricated using the wet lay-up manufacturing technique under vacuum pressure. Both the glass/epoxy composites and the FML specimens were then subjected to isothermal aging (130°C, dried air) for up to 5 we...
